More eating data

Maya is three weeks old today, and I can show you how well she ate all week:

She eats… you know, I have to interrupt here. I don’t know why people talk about infants “eating.” The only thing the baby consumes is milk (either au naturel or synthetic); it’s in liquid form, and I don’t see any chewing going on, so why isn’t it called “drinking?” So, she drinks less at each feeding now, and thus has been clamouring for milk more frequently. We were convinced that this is because she was previously in her first growth spurt (there’s supposed to be two more: at six weeks, and then at three months of age) that’s slowing down now. But she did consume 25% more than the week before, so that tells you how little we know.

Rebecca is wary of how, um, precisely I’ve been keeping track of Maya’s milk consumption (she used a less euphemistic way of describing it).  I’ve truly horrified her by telling her I might start tracking poop-filled and wet diapers, and displaying them with appropriate little icons on the graphs I display here.
